Žemytė Cemetery

Žemytė Cemetery, located in the western part of Skuodas district in the Žemytė forest, is a valuable archaeological site established between the 9th and 13th centuries. This 1.4-hectare area, situated 45 meters from the Kretinga–Skuodas road, was used as a homestead site in the 20th century, with potato cellars dug into the soil. Later, after the homestead was demolished, the area was planted with forest, but various archaeological artifacts were discovered during land work. In 2004, a unique bronze horseshoe-shaped brooch was found here by Linas Tamulynas, an archaeologist from the Cultural Heritage Center. In 2005, the cemetery was included in the list of state-protected cultural heritage sites, becoming an important testament to Curonian material culture.
