Veisiejai, situated on two picturesque peninsulas of Lake Ančia, became an important center for the Jewish community in southern Lithuania since the 18th century. This area was strategically attractive to settlers, as the main trade route to Sejny passed through Veisiejai. With the permission of the Bishop of Vilnius, a synagogue was built here at the end of the 18th century, leading to the formation of a strong Jewish community that significantly contributed to the economic development of the town.
By the end of the 19th century, Jews comprised a large portion of the local population and were
active in various fields, ranging from stores and a power plant to bakeries, butcheries, and pharmacies. Notably, it was the Jewish youth who founded the first football club, a tradition that continues today with the football club "Dainava."
The synagogue, built in 1748, became the center of religious and cultural life in the area, although it was rebuilt several times due to fires. The current wooden synagogue, constructed in 1927 on the shores of Lake Ančia, has preserved its original architecture and now serves as a Baptist church, maintaining the multicultural heritage of Veisiejai.
