In the heart of the Samogitia region, a small 23-bell carillon was installed for the first time in Varniai, cast by the renowned Dutch bell foundry “ROYAL EIJSBOUTS.” This carillon was created to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the Christianization of Samogitia, celebrated from 2013 to 2017. It symbolizes the connection between Samogitia's history and its religious significance.

In 1417, following the decision of the Council of Constance, the Diocese of Medininkai was established in Samogitia, with its location chosen by Grand Duke Vytautas of Lithuania. This is a unique case in the history of the Catholic Church where
a diocese was founded by a council rather than by the Pope. In 1864, during the repressive rule of Tsarist Russia, Bishop Motiejus Valančius of Samogitia was exiled to Kaunas, marking a significant step in the suppression of Lithuanian culture in the city. After the establishment of the Ecclesiastical Province of Lithuania in 1926, the Telšiai Diocese was formed within the historical territory of the Samogitian Diocese, becoming the largest part of the province. The bishop's seat was transferred to St. Anthony of Padua Cathedral in Telšiai, where the ancient traditions of the Samogitian Diocese continue to this day.
