The hillfort, also known as Pilale, is situated on a separate hill on the left bank of the Virvyčia River. Its platform is rectangular, elongated in the east-west direction, and measures 60 by 35 meters. The slopes of the hillfort are moderately steep, reaching up to 12 meters in height.
At the southern and western foot of the hillfort was a settlement covering an area of 6 hectares. Near the hillfort, in the Užstelniai area, a cremation cemetery from the early 2nd millennium has been discovered.
In 1964, archaeological investigations conducted by the Institute of Lithuanian History revealed the hillfort's significance in the 1st millennium – 13th century. It is believed that a Curonian castle mentioned in documents from 1253 by the Livonian Order and Bishop Heinrich of Courland stood here, concerning the division of the southern Curonian lands.
