St. Alexander Church in Varniai is one of the oldest and most significant sacred sites in Samogitia, attracting both locals and tourists. Historical sources indicate that a parish church already stood in Varniai at the time of the establishment of the Medininkai Diocese, which later became the Diocese of Samogitia. On the same site where the current church building stands, a church was erected under the care of Vytautas the Great and consecrated in 1417. In honor of Vytautas, the church was named after St. Alexander, the Christian name of Vytautas the Great.
Throughout its history, the church has been rebuilt and renovated several times. The current architectural appearance, formed in 1779, reflects the late Lithuanian Baroque style combined with wooden folk architecture. After World War II, when the Soviet authorities closed and vandalized the church, it was returned to the faithful and fully restored in 1991.
