In Marijampolė, near the Evangelical Lutheran Church, stands a monument to the pioneer of Lithuanian literature, Kristijonas Donelaitis. The monument was unveiled on November 22, 2013, marking the 300th anniversary of the literary classic's birth. The idea for the monument originated from the Kristijonas Donelaitis Society of Marijampolė, led by Vida Mickuvienė. The project was carried out by the renowned sculptor Zigmas Buterlevičius and architect Gintautas Vieversys. The construction was funded by donations, and a time capsule containing the names and signatures of benefactors was embedded at its base.

Kristijonas Donelaitis was an Evangelical Lutheran priest and a creator of Lithuanian prose literature, whose poem "Metai" (The Seasons) is recognized as a European literary heritage masterpiece. In celebration of the poet’s 300th birthday, UNESCO included this anniversary in its list of 100 significant dates for world culture, education, science, and historical memory.
