Marijampolė, now known as a vibrant and dynamic city, owes its beginnings to an extraordinary woman—Countess Pranciška Butlerienė. As an influential and strong personality, the Countess invited the first Marian monk, built a church and a Marian monastery, and founded Marijampolė. In the historic old town area, where you can still find the Countess's cats playing with water in the courtyard, the city’s past and its founder’s legacy can be felt.

In the historic old town area, where you can still find the Countess's cats playing with water in the courtyard, the city’s past and its founder’s legacy can be felt. According to old local tales, Countess Pranciška Butlerienė had a deep affection for cats, and this
tradition may well be founded. The Countess's patron saint was St. Frances of Rome, and in the old town of Marijampolė, a cozy courtyard with cats was created in her honor. The eternal city, renowned for its architecture and impressive history, is also known for its multitude of cats, which symbolize not only beauty but also the local culture. Local residents note that it is said if you make a wish and pet three cats, your wishes will surely come true. However, it should be kept in mind that Suvalkian cats are not fulfillers of financial desires.
