In 1617, Jeronimas Valavičius constructed a wooden, single-tower church near Vabalninkas Manor, which served as an important community site. Unfortunately, this church burned down in 1696, and a temporary shed was erected in its place. Later, in 1714, at the initiative of Father Abraomas Skirmantas, a new wooden single-tower church was built. However, in 1729, a large fire destroyed this church and all parish buildings.

In 1734, a third wooden church was built with a tiled roof and three altars. This church featured modest neoclassical and ornate neo-Baroque forms. It was basilica-shaped, rectangular in plan, and had five altars installed. Thanks to the efforts of Canon A. Smalinavičius, the churchyard was enclosed with masonry in 1806, and in 1808, a brick rectory was constructed. Finally, between 1814 and 1817, the present brick church was built, which stands to this day.
