Nestled amidst the greenery of Šumskas, the Church of St. Michael the Archangel and the Dominican monastery complex are true historical gems. This sacred ensemble can be accessed through the distinctive gates under the bell tower. This serene and meticulously maintained site invites visitors to explore its unique past and acquaint themselves with its chapel poles and artworks. The Church of St. Michael the Archangel, adorned with late Baroque and Classicist architectural details, amazes visitors with its massive, yet towerless symmetry and expressive facade decorations. An impressive stone fence, linking the churchyard with the bell tower and gates, gives the complex a unified appearance. The church's interior, characteristic of the spiritual culture of the Dominican monks, is decorated with sculptures of the Crucified and frescoes that reflect deeply on the Passion of Christ. The three altars and wall paintings feature Baroque theatricality, creating an illusion of the paintings' liveliness. The main altar of the church stands out with its 18th-century Baroque dynamism, depicting the victorious battle of Archangel Michael with

the devil. This piece is a true masterpiece of art, conveying a spiritual message of power and hope. Renovated and part of the New Vilnia Deanery, the Church of St. Michael the Archangel and the Dominican monastery today host Holy Masses conducted in Polish. At the end of the 17th century, Mykolas and Halina Šumskiai inspired and funded the construction of a wooden church, later naming the settlement after their surname. Their initiative also established the Dominican monastery, which soon became the spiritual center of the town. The church and monastery's history includes tales of devastation by the French army and persecution by the Tsarist authorities, transforming the site over the centuries. However, through the community's efforts, these sacred buildings have been restored and continue to reclaim their original spirit. The inscription "Jesu in te confido" in the bell tower not only invites reflection but also symbolizes the importance of faith and trust. Today, the church and monastery of Šumskas not only reflect the history of the Dominican Order but also continue its mission to spread knowledge and spirituality.
