Vytautas Hill is situated between the Kražantė River, Lake Dausynas, and Medžiokalnis. Historians and archaeologists suggest that at the foot of this hill, there was an ancient settlement that existed over 4000 years ago. In the 12th century, a military fortress might have stood on this hill. Grand Duke Vytautas is said to have ordered the construction of one of the first Christian temples in Samogitia on this hill. The sanctuary was rebuilt five times as frequent fires destroyed it. However, after the fire on June 25, 1941, the church was not rebuilt.
Today, those wishing to view Kražiai climb the 50 stone steps to Vytautas Hill. Here, in this most archaic archaeological monument, stands a brick bell tower built around 1852 from the bricks of the crumbling Jesuit church walls.
