The Battle of Virtukai took place on July 22, 1945, in the Virtukai Forest near the Lyduvėnai railway station, between the Žebenkštis detachment of Lithuanian partisans and NKVD soldiers who surrounded their camp.

In 1995, marking the 50th anniversary of the Virtukai battle, a memorial was erected and consecrated under the oak trees to commemorate the victims of the freedom fights. In 2008, five typical memorial signs were added, along with another memorial sign at the edge of the Virtukai Forest.

Initiated by Kęstutis Markevičius, the grandson of Petras Markevičius-Pranckus who died in the battle, a memorial stone "To the Fallen Heroes of the Virtukai Battle" was erected at the battle site in the Virtukai Forest in 2018.
