Monument to Martynas Liudvikas Rėza in Juodkrantė

In one of the main squares of the Juodkrantė resort stands a monument to Martynas Liudvikas Rėza (1776-1840), a professor at the University of Königsberg, publisher of Lithuanian texts, and a prominent advocate of the Lithuanian language and folklore.
The monument, created by sculptor Arūnas Sakalauskas and erected in 1994, commemorates Rėza's achievements, including the 1818 publication of Kristijonas Donelaitis' influential Lithuanian literary work "The Seasons" and the 1825 publication of the collection of Lithuanian songs "Dainos oder Littauische Volkslieder."
Rėza, a native of the now-vanished nearby village of Karvaičiai (1776–1840), was also a writer, poet, folklore enthusiast, and, perhaps most importantly, a tireless ambassador of the Lithuanian language.
