Since the 18th century, the part of Skirsnemunė known as Žvyriai was inhabited by German craftsmen and traders. The Žvyriai Evangelical Lutheran Church was built in 1849, although the parish had been active since the late 18th century. The church is small, wooden, and features a tower. During the Soviet era, when many Evangelical Lutheran places of worship were closed, this church became a gathering center for believers from the surrounding areas.
