Soldiers arrived by vehicles from Pašvaginė and walked the last stretch to the bunker on foot. Another group of soldiers stayed in ambush in case the partisans tried to retreat towards Užsienis village.
The sentry, upon spotting the enemy, ordered to leave the bunker and prepare for defense. About 1 km from the bunker, the pursuers stumbled upon the partisans' ambush – killing one soldier and injuring another. However, while retreating, the partisans split up and became targets for the soldiers.
Those retreating towards Užsienis ran into fortified machine gunners and were killed one after another. P. Cicėnas – Žalgiris attempted to escape on horseback but was also
shot. Two fighters fell near the Lauksteniai barrows. Out of twelve partisans, seven managed to escape successfully. Those who perished while retreating were: the adjutant of the Lokys Battalion commander, Petras Cicėnas – Žalgiris (from Daubariškė village), the commander of the Erškėtis Company, Albertas Vytėnas – Siaubas (from Ažvinčiai village), an officer of the Šventoji District Headquarters, Jonas Čičelis – Ramūnas (Šermukšnis) from Rokėnai village, and Stasys Butrimas – Kerštas (from Jakėnai village). During the pursuit of the partisans, Red Army soldiers Tolkač and Arzubov were injured, with the latter dying from his wounds the same day
