Dr. Eugenija Šimkūnaitė (1920–1996), a habilitated doctor of biological sciences, left an invaluable ethnocultural legacy to Lithuania through her work and life, creating lasting memories for those who knew her. This unique folk healer, born in Novorossiysk (Russia), spent most of her life in Tauragnai, where she now rests in eternal peace. While still alive, she expressed a wish for a cherry tree to be planted on her grave. To commemorate her memory, the "Gesės Cherry Orchard" was initiated by D. Kunčienė, president of the Herbalists Academy, near Lake Labė in 2012. The first cherry trees were donated by the Herbalists Academy, and the planting continued with the help of members of the E. Šimkūnaitė Foundation, the local community, and other enthusiasts. A local craftsman, R. Šimkūnas, created a gate for the orchard's enclosing fence with a distinctive inscription.
