Construction of the church began in 1906 and was completed in 1932, by which time it had become a cathedral. The building is in the Neo-Gothic style with Neo-Romanesque decorative elements on its facade. The cathedral is known for its graceful proportions. A distinctive feature is the relatively low chapels attached to the main building on both sides of the side naves, creating a harmonious and cohesive architectural whole.
One of the chapels houses the final resting place of Blessed Teofilius Matulionis, whose life serves as an example for all. His chosen motto, "Through the Cross to the Stars," reflected the essence of his pastoral mission—to proclaim the hope of salvation through the death and resurrection of the Savior.
