The Pakalniškiai Educational Trail is one of the most interesting routes in the Kaunas Reservoir Regional Park, designed for both active leisure enthusiasts and nature lovers. This 3 km long trail connects Girionys Park with the historical Pakalniškiai Hillfort, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore the region’s natural and cultural heritage.
The route starts in Girionys, marked by an informational sign, and continues through hilly terrain, ridges, and along the Kaunas Reservoir shore. The trail is not circular, allowing travelers to choose whether to walk from Girionys to the Pakalniškiai Hillfort or vice versa. Green-and-white signs indicate the direction from Girionys to the hillfort, while yellow-and-white signs guide the way in the opposite direction. Interestingly, sections of the trail in different directions differ slightly, so visitors can experience both routes and enjoy different views.
Along the way, visitors can admire the breathtaking panoramas of the Kaunas Reservoir, especially from the cliffs and slopes. Observation decks along the trail provide excellent opportunities to relax and enjoy the landscape. One of these spots is a philotopic bench near the trailhead in Girionys, offering a view of the Pažaislis Monastery across the reservoir. Another observation
point is the Pakalniškiai Hillfort, located at the end of the trail.
In addition to the natural beauty, the trail also offers educational elements. Informational boards along the route introduce visitors to local vegetation, birds, and forest animals. It is also possible to learn about the tuffs forming on the spring-fed slopes, as well as the sufozic cirques and cliffs. Additionally, visitors will find riddle boards along the trail, where one side poses a question and the other provides the answer, adding extra fun during the journey.
The trip along the Pakalniškiai Educational Trail takes about 2 hours, covering approximately 3 km. Due to the hilly terrain and various natural features, the trail is an ideal place not only for walking but also for running or Nordic walking enthusiasts. Rest areas with benches along the way offer a chance to pause, relax, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
The Pakalniškiai Educational Trail is a perfect example of how to combine active recreation with learning about nature and culture. It is a place where everyone can discover something interesting and valuable, whether it's impressive landscapes or new knowledge about the region’s ecosystem. A visit to this trail will enrich your free time and provide unforgettable experiences.
