In 2021, marking the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust, the artistic composition “The Apple Tree” by folk artist Artūras Platakis was unveiled in Darbėnai’s Market Square. This creation honors the memory of the Darbėnai Jewish community, notable Litvaks, and those who risked their lives to save Jewish people from mass executions.
The composition features prominent names, including Zionist leader David Wolffsohn, born in Darbėnai 165 years ago, who designed Israel’s flag and named its currency, as well as 14 Lithuanians who saved Darbėnai Jews. “The Apple Tree” symbolizes not only a tragic history but also the courage and humanity preserved during the most challenging times.
