Medininkai Castle is one of the most important historical sites in Lithuania, blending the architectural features of the 13th-14th centuries with the rich history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. This impressive defensive complex is recognized as one of the most authentic enclosure-type castles and one of the oldest stone and brick monuments in the country. The construction of the castle began in the 13th century, with the first documented mention dating back to 1387, coinciding with the Christianization of Lithuania.
The castle is renowned for its unique architecture and stories of visits by
Grand Duke Vytautas of Lithuania, as well as the life of the Tatar community in the nearby Pilkapiai village. Although the castle's significance declined over time, the restoration of Lithuanian statehood marked a new chapter in its history, including reconstruction efforts and the opening of an exhibition branch of the Trakai History Museum. Visitors are invited to explore various exhibitions dedicated to Lithuanian defensive architecture, the history of weaponry, and silversmithing, as well as to enjoy the unparalleled panoramic views of the surroundings from the observation deck of the keep.
