The Salantai area bears witness to a painful chapter of history – on July 1, 1941, mass executions of the men from the Salantai Jewish community took place here. The killings, carried out by German SS officers and their Lithuanian collaborators, resulted in the deaths of over 150 people. This site became a somber historical marker, commemorated by several memorial objects.
At the foot of the hill, in the 1980s, a concrete tombstone with a metal memorial plaque was erected to honor the victims. Nearby, at the top of the hill, a monument was built in 1967, further emphasizing the significance of this place for historical remembrance and inviting visitors to reflect on the events of the past.
