Rūdaičiai Hillfort, also known as Pilalė, rises on a picturesque height along the Žiba River. It is believed that this hillfort was used in the 1st millennium, dating back to the 13th century. Although it has been significantly altered by plowing, trenches, and a triangulation tower, the hillfort still stands out due to its historical and cultural significance. The area is surrounded by deciduous trees, adding to its charm and mystery.
Legend has it that the hillfort was haunted – locals claimed to have seen a giant man wading through the Žiba River. Another tale speaks of an ancient manor that once stood on this hill, sinking into the earth along with its inhabitants. This hillfort is not only a historical site but also a great place to explore the cultural heritage of Samogitia.
