The Kurmaičiai Hillfort, also known as Pilalė, is located at the impressive confluence of the Akmena and Pilsupis rivers, on the left bank of the Akmena River. This hillfort was in use from the late 1st millennium BC to the 3rd century AD, becoming part of a larger ancient settlement complex, which includes the Kurmaičiai cemetery and barrows.

With the damming of the Akmena River, an 82-hectare pond has formed near the hillfort, with its waves causing erosion of the hillfort’s slopes. In some places, deeper erosion is occurring, and the preservation of the hillfort increasingly depends on protective measures.

This archaeological complex reveals the history of the ancient settlement and highlights the significance of Kurmaičiai in the region. A visit to the hillfort offers not only a connection to the past but also the opportunity to enjoy the natural landscape, where history merges with the present.
