The Vėlaičiai Hillfort, along with its settlement at the foot, is situated on a promontory at the confluence of the Alantas and Tyrupalio rivers. This historical site dates back to the second half of the 1st millennium BCE – the 10th century, while the settlement at the foot of the hill is believed to have existed from the 8th to the 10th century. It is thought that a wooden castle with a forecourt once stood here, protecting the ancient inhabitants living in the surrounding area.

The defensive significance of the hillfort is evidenced by the discovery of an iron spearhead, which serves as a reminder of past battles with enemies. Unfortunately, the fast-flowing Alantas River has washed away much of the hillfort over the centuries, leaving only small remnants of it. The Vėlaičiai hillfort complex, covering an area of 3.78 hectares, is considered the earliest settlement in the Kartenos region and an important archaeological site.
