At the foot of the Kartenos Hillfort, near the confluence of the Kūlapis and Minija rivers, stands the famous Kartenos Stone, also known as Laumės Kūlis or the Cow (or Devil’s) Footprint. This boulder, surrounded by myths and legends, is well-known to locals and visitors alike.

It is said that in ancient times, people would see spirits of the laumes (female mythical beings) weaving clothes near the stone at night, and once a maid encountered a mysterious soldier by the stone, who vanished when she mentioned the name of Jesus. The surface of the stone is covered with numerous natural depressions, which give it a unique appearance. The largest of these is called the Cow’s or Devil’s Footprint, attracting both curious visitors and mythology enthusiasts.

This site is not only a natural wonder but also a great stop on a journey through the Kartenos region – an ideal place for walks and discovering local legends.
