Site of Partisan Desecration in Kartena Market Square

In the town of Kartena, on Plungės Street, the former market square bears witness to a tragic chapter in Lithuania's history. Between 1946 and 1951, near the cross erected in 1901 to commemorate the Christian Jubilee, Soviet enforcers displayed the bodies of fallen partisans from the Žemaičiai Region Kardo Detachment’s Kadagys Unit (Bugantas Company) for identification and desecration.
The cross, a symbol of faith and the spirit of resistance, was destroyed in the 1970s but was restored on May 5, 1989. Today, this location stands as an important memorial site, encouraging reflection on the history of Lithuania’s struggle for freedom.
