On Mokyklos Street (Mokyklos St. 4) in the town of Kartena, a commemorative plaque marks a building that served as the NKVD-MVD-MGB branch and headquarters for Soviet enforcers from 1945 to 1953. It was here that Lithuanian freedom fighters, resisting Soviet occupation, were imprisoned, interrogated, and tortured. The plaque honors their suffering and ultimate sacrifice for Lithuania’s independence.
Unveiled in 2008, the plaque was created by Arvydas Klovas. This symbolic marker encourages reflection on and respect for history and has become an important site for tourists interested in Lithuania’s resistance struggles.
