The Forest of Europe is a symbolic woodland established in Alseta village, Rokiškis district (Panemunėlis eldership), to commemorate Lithuania’s accession to the European Union. This meaningful initiative was undertaken in 2003 by the foresters of the Rokiškis Forestry Enterprise to mark this historic event. Work progressed swiftly to ensure that the first saplings would take root by May 1, 2004, the day Lithuania officially joined the EU.
A 50-hectare unused meadow was transformed into a forest by hundreds of enthusiasts, including municipal employees, representatives of schools and local institutions, residents, and even volunteers from the Employment Bureau. Planted with pines and birches, the forest became not only a natural haven but also a significant historical landmark. It is an excellent destination for tourists interested in ecological tourism and Lithuania’s history.
