The Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Jūžintai is an exceptional example of late Baroque architecture in Lithuania and the only church in the Baltic States that once housed a monastery. The Canons Regular of Penance lived in eight small cells located behind the main altar. These tiny rooms are evidenced by small square windows on the exterior wall. The cramped cells provided just enough space to lie down, where the monks knelt in penance. The monastery operated until 1832.
Beneath the church are crypts where the remains of the church's founders rest. This unique site attracts history and architecture enthusiasts, but visits must be arranged in advance.
