Ludwik Lazarus Zamenhof (1859–1917), the famous creator of the Esperanto language, lived in Veisiejai from 1885. Born in Białystok, this intellectual of Lithuanian Jewish descent studied many languages in his youth—eventually mastering 12 in total. While in high school, he developed a project for an international language, but his father’s disapproval led him to pursue medicine instead. After studying medicine in Moscow and Warsaw, Zamenhof came to Veisiejai to join his sister’s husband and began his medical practice. It was in Veisiejai that he restored the Esperanto manuscript, making the town known as the birthplace of the Esperanto language.
