Ludwik Lazarus Zamenhof (1859–1917), the creator of the Esperanto language, lived in Veisiejai from 1885 onwards, which is now regarded as the birthplace of Esperanto. Born into a Jewish family in Bialystok, Ludwik was fascinated by languages from a young age and learned up to 12 foreign languages during his schooling. After finishing school, he developed the first draft of an international language project; however, his father, not understanding his ambitions, burned the manuscript and encouraged Ludwik to study medicine. After studying medicine in Moscow and Warsaw, Ludwik arrived in Veisiejai to stay with his sister's husband, where he practiced as a doctor. In Veisiejai, he reconstructed the manuscript of the Esperanto language, giving this town significance not only in the context of Lithuania but also in the world of culture.
