On January 26, 1947, a decisive battle took place at the Graužai Manor, in Antanas Čeponis's estate, between partisans of the Dainava district's Šarūnas battalion, led by Jurgis Gylis-Kalnius, and the Soviet MVD army's 34th rifle regiment, commanded by Lieutenant Belorybkin. The partisans fought bravely in their defense, but during the clash, Antanas Zdanavičius-Viltis was killed, and Andrius Neifalta-Gintaras was severely wounded, dying two days later. Partisan Eugenija Krušinskaitė-Aguona was also injured, while the estate owner, Antanas Čeponis, was arrested. Witnesses reported that about 30 partisans had arrived at the estate, and in caring for the sick partisan Ona Saveikytė-Neužmirštuolė, they sent Jonas Strenkauskas to seek the priest's assistance. The priest conducted the rites but was later arrested and died in the camps.
