In Margai village, in what is now Lazdijai district, on November 11, 1945, a dramatic battle took place between partisans and a unit of the Soviet NKVD army. Albinas Kisieliauskas-Karvelis, the commander of the Mindaugas group of the Šarūnas battalion in the Dainava district, originally from Murgai village, was betrayed by an MGB informant. Upon learning of Karvelis's planned return, the NKVD organized an ambush. Although the Soviet agents attempted to capture the partisan, Karvelis bravely resisted—entering a cottage, he grabbed a weapon and, after an intense struggle, used the enemies' automatic rifle to defend himself. However, he ultimately took his own life.
