The mysterious Lake Alaušas is one of the most important natural treasures of the Utena region and the tenth largest lake in Lithuania, covering an area of 1,071.8 hectares. According to legend, on the eastern shore, atop Maneičių Hill, stood the castle of Duke Alaušas. The duke, who deeply loved this clear lake, requested that his ashes be scattered into its waters before his death, which is how the lake came to bear his name.

On the western side, you can find the Bikuškis Manor, which recalls the illustrious histories of the Radziwiłł and Oginski families. The southern shore is home to the town of Sudeikiai, which invites vacationers seeking peace and the beauty of unspoiled nature. Lake Alaušas attracts visitors throughout the year. Its shores allure with clean, fish-filled waters, well-maintained beach areas, and wide sandy spots that are perfect for families with
children. The lake’s depth gradually increases, making it an excellent place for safe relaxation with little ones. Strolling along the shores or enjoying the view of the lake while boating, riding water bikes, or floating on rafts is also a delight. Alaušas offers not only opportunities to bask in the summer sun or engage in water activities but also serves as a gathering place for winter sports enthusiasts—drawing in fishermen and ice skating fans. For those wishing to explore Aukštaitija, starting the journey in Sudeikiai and visiting Lake Alaušas is highly recommended. Here, vacationers can enjoy modern infrastructure, including rural tourism farms, campsites, a diving center, outdoor gym equipment, and playgrounds for children. Alaušas is a true hub of attraction in Aukštaitija, both in summer and winter—offering quality relaxation and active recreation.
