The town of Užpaliai began to take shape in the 16th century when trade started to develop and a Jewish community settled here. During the period of independent Lithuania, Užpaliai had a significant Jewish community – according to census data, 316 residents of Jewish nationality were registered in the town. On the outskirts of the town, in a pine forest, the old Jewish cemetery still remains, mentioned in historical sources since 1809. This cemetery is included in the register of cultural values as an important memorial site.
