Dr. Jonas Basanavičius (1851–1927), a key figure in the Lithuanian national revival, a scholar, and a physician, visited Utena in the early 20th century, where he studied the region’s burial mounds and hillforts. A street in the city is named after him, and a monument dedicated to him stands in a small square.
The monument, created by sculptor Boleslovas Plungė and erected in 1934, has endured through difficult historical periods and was restored, most recently in 2018, to mark the 100th anniversary of the restoration of the Lithuanian state. The monument, surrounded by lime trees in the square, is one of the first monuments dedicated to this symbol of national revival in Lithuania and holds the status of a cultural heritage site.
