The history of the Jewish community in Utena dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries, and the cultural heritage of this community is now an essential part of the city's identity. Utena is also known as the birthplace of Bernardo Louno, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and world-renowned cardiologist from a Lithuanian Jewish family. He invented the defibrillator and made significant contributions to modern medicine. In his memory, a commemoration station has been established in the city garden of Utena—a unique bench where visitors can rest and read the thoughts of his mother, Bela, encouraging a love for nature.
