The Šakališkiai Hillfort, also known as Aušrakalnis, is an important archaeological site located in the eastern part of Marijampolė Municipality, in the village of Šakališkiai, Igliauka Eldership. The hillfort is situated on the right bank of the Šlavantas Stream. It can be reached by driving on the Marijampolė–Prienai highway, turning towards Daukšiai in Šakališkiai, and then taking a left turn southwest. From this turn, drive 550 meters, and the hillfort will be on the right.
The Šakališkiai Hillfort has been known since ancient times. In the early 20th century, local historian Juozapas Radziukynas described
the hillfort. It is also mentioned in the novel “Altorių šešėlyje” by writer Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas. In 1935, the State Archaeological Commission gathered information about the hillfort and instructed landowner Jonas Karalius to protect it. In 1972, the hillfort was declared a monument of national significance. In 1997, it was included in the list of archaeological sites in the Cultural Heritage Register of the Republic of Lithuania as a cultural heritage complex. In 1998, by Government Resolution No. 612, the hillfort was declared a cultural monument, and in 2005, it was recognized as a state-protected monument.
