On April 4, 1975, the largest train accident in Lithuanian history occurred at Žasliai railway station, officially claiming 20 lives. The number of injured remains unknown. The tragedy, caused by technical failure, happened around 5:30 PM. A passenger-packed express diesel train traveling from Vilnius to Kaunas collided with a gasoline tanker protruding onto the track from a freight train stationed at Žasliai.
At the site of the tragedy, there is a chapel post and a cross.
