Gerduvėnai Hillfort, located in the Klaipėda district between the banks of the Minija River, captivates with its mystery and adventurous spirit. Despite being visible from the highway, its hidden nature and challenging accessibility make it less known among visitors. Those who wish to explore Gerduvėnai Hillfort will need to detour from the main road at Vėžaičiai and follow the signs, embarking on a hike through the valley towards Lapiai. The hillfort, standing on the left bank of the Gerdauja River, presents a true challenge for explorers with its steep slopes reaching up to 35 meters high. After conquering the slopes, hikers will reach an oval-shaped platform measuring 95×70 meters, where clear defensive structures are hard to discern compared to other similar sites. However, in the southeastern edge of the hillfort, historical remnants
of ditches and a small rampart, as well as a minor forework, can be observed, adding an aura of mystery to the site. Local legends claim that on holy days and at midnight, an old man smoking a pipe appears at the top of the hillfort, or a mysterious sound is heard rolling down into the Gerdauja River. These tales give the place a mystical character and encourage visitors to seek the stories hidden among the ancient hills. Not far from the hillfort, to its west, ancient settlement remains can be found, and 500 meters to the south lies a cemetery dating from the 2nd to the 13th century, providing clues to the historical significance of this area. This unusual and mystical location is an excellent choice for those who enjoy uncovering historical secrets and appreciating natural beauty while exploring lesser-known places in Lithuania.
