In the town of Kruonis, the eve of February 16th is marked as Lithuania's Independence Day. On the night of February 15, 1946, three partisans from the Great Fight Partisan District prepared to raise the Tricolor flag in the town of Kruonis. Unfortunately, they fell into an ambush and were killed. Their bodies were desecrated in the town square and later taken to the nearby Gojaus Forest, where they were buried in abandoned trenches. It was determined that 32 partisans' remains were buried in this forest. After Lithuania regained independence, efforts were made to honor the fallen. A cross was erected, bearing the names of the deceased.
