In 1764, Empress Catherine II of Russia traveled from Saint Petersburg to Riga and visited the Vidzeme region. She wanted to see for herself whether there were still serfs who couldn’t read or write and whether they could be bought or sold.
During her visit, the Empress stopped in the Pabaži seaside area near the White Dune. There she rested, swam in the sea, and, inspired by the beauty of the place, planted two linden trees. These trees still flourish today, serving as living reminders of historical events and maintaining a connection to the 18th century. The spot where the Empress bathed later became known as Catherine’s Bath (Katrīnbāde).
