In the coastal dunes of Saulkrasti, near the “Lagūna” restaurant, the Russian army built defensive dugouts during World War I to protect the shore from German landings. These positions were part of a strategic defense line stretching from Saulkrasti to Koknese, linked to fortifications along the Daugava River. The line defended river crossings, road networks to central Vidzeme, and the coastline. Today, visitors can explore preserved trenches in a scenic seaside forest with sea views – a rare combination of wartime heritage and natural beauty in Saulkrasti’s tourism routes.
