Kõmsi Tarand Graves

In the village of Kõmsi, next to the Orthodox church, lie some of Estonia’s oldest tarand graves, dating back over 2,500 years. A preserved open grave allows visitors to explore ancient burial traditions – around a dozen burial mounds have been found here, with the oldest located in the center of the cemetery.
Initially, the dead were buried without cremation, which was later introduced. The site was used until the turn of the 1st millennium. The cemetery is rich in archaeological finds, including jewelry from the Upper Volga–Oka region, indicating far-reaching ancient trade routes. Nearby, there is also a cremation burial field and remains of ancient cultivated fields.
