The ruins of Virtsu Castle are among the most fascinating medieval heritage sites in Estonia, first mentioned in 1465. This vassal castle, which belonged to the Bishopric of Saare-Lääne, was built to monitor sea traffic between the mainland and Saaremaa. In 1533, it was destroyed during a conflict with the Margrave of Brandenburg, and in 1536, its reconstruction was officially banned. Though only ruins remain, they continue to attract culture and history enthusiasts exploring Estonia’s past.
