Kihnu St. Nicholas Church, built in 1784, is unique in that it was originally a Lutheran sanctuary later adapted for the Orthodox community. In 1846–1847, nearly all residents of Kihnu converted to Orthodoxy, and the church was repurposed, with an onion dome added to its tower. Today, the church is known for its iconostasis and is one of the most visited sites on Kihnu Island. According to legend, an earlier chapel was destroyed by fire during the Great Northern War.
