In the urban structure of 18th-century Klaipėda, an impressive square building known as the "Comedy House" initially served a military purpose but later became a cultural hub. The city administration, paying for the use of this state land, became the proprietor of Klaipėda's first theater. In the urban structure of 18th-century Klaipėda, an impressive square building known as the "Comedy House" initially served a military purpose but later became a cultural hub. The city administration, paying for the use of this state land, became the proprietor of Klaipėda's first theater. Since 1777, this building housed the theater, soon to be joined by actors from Berlin. Although the subsequent history of the "Comedy House" remains unclear, it is known that the site of the Theater Square once featured the marshes of the Danė River. Interestingly, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the area housed a marksmen's warehouse, which was later transformed
into a theater hall by merchant Vachsen. The foundation of the Klaipėda Drama Theater was laid in 1935 when a theater was relocated from Šiauliai, under the leadership of Juozas Stanulis. By 1936, following the staging of Romualdas Juknevičius' play "Hope," Klaipėda's theater was noted for its progressiveness, even surpassing the Kaunas State Theater. At the end of World War II, on October 1, 1945, the Klaipėda Musical Comedy Theater was established. Over time, it evolved into a musical drama theater and later into a purely drama theater, known today as the Klaipėda Drama Theater, reflecting the city's cultural development and theatrical traditions.
