This charming coastal area, known as Smiltynė, was first recorded in history in 1429 as Sandberg, later as Sandkrug, and in the 20th century, it became known by its current name. In the 20th century, Smiltynė gained prestige as a resort area, attracting many visitors due to its stunning nature, sparkling sand, and pleasant walking trails. Meanwhile, Kopgalis, a gem of the Curonian Spit, stands out for its youthful formation history that lasted until the mid-19th century. For a long time, it was not specifically named. The Germans referred to this place as Suderhuk or Suderpitze, while the local Lithuanian community eventually named the dunes touching the water as Kopgalis. This name took hold by the late 19th century and became a symbol of the area.
