In 2003, for the city’s anniversary, the sculpture "Aušra" was unveiled in Šiauliai, created by Dalia Matulaitė. This massive 20-ton statue was designed to commemorate the first Lithuanian-language monthly magazine, Aušra, which was published between 1883 and 1886. The magazine became an important symbol of the national movement. It was edited by Dr. Jonas Basanavičius and Jonas Šliūpas, and its goal was to promote Lithuanian national consciousness and reveal the history of the nation.
