The memorial plaque at 45A Vilniaus Street in Molėtai marks the location of the former synagogues courtyard – an important symbol of the Jewish community’s history in this town. Jews settled in Molėtai in the early 18th century and quickly received permission to build the first synagogue, which became the cultural and religious center of the Jewish community. By the mid-19th century, the Jewish population in the town had reached 1,000, and later accounted for as much as 80% of the entire population. Before World War II, Jews were the dominant group in the town, and three more synagogues were built, collectively known as the "Synagogues Courtyard." Although these buildings no longer stand, their memory is preserved through a symbolic plaque and monument located at the former site of the Synagogues Courtyard.
