Kudinai Hillfort, also known as Šiaulė or Saulė Hill, is a mysterious and legend-filled site in the Šiauliai district. It is believed that a powerful castle once stood here, along with its city, which, according to legend, was buried under sand. The hillfort dates back to the late 1st millennium – early 2nd millennium, with steep slopes reaching 12–18 meters in height. At the top, a circular platform (25 meters in diameter) holds an old cross. Nearby, the foothill settlement, as well as Varpinės and Kartuvių Hills, add to the historical significance of the area.
A local legend connects this place to the Battle of Saulė, claiming that the earth swallowed the enemy army. To this day, people believe that if you press your ear against the Great Hill, you can hear the echo of the ancient bell tower.
